Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital is located on the eastern edge of the "Kita" area in Kita-ku, Osaka City, centered around Osaka Station and Umeda Station, and is located southwest of our hospital.
Tsunashiki Tenjin Shrine is located in Kamiyamacho, in the center of Umeda, a 4-minute walk away.
In January 901, when the Minister of the Right, Sugawara no Michizane, was demoted to Dazaifu, he passed through Kamiyama-cho and was stopped by the red plum blossoms that were in bloom. He then stretched out a stern rope to create an impromptu viewing stand for Michizane, which is where the name "Tsunashiki" of Tsunashiki Tenjin Shrine came from.
After Michizane's death in Dazaifu, a small shrine was built under the red plum tree that he loved and called "Umezuka" (Plum Mound) to enshrine Michizane.
It is said that the red plum blossoms are the origin of the character for plum in Umeda.
Additionally, Tsunashiki Tenjin Shrine was also commonly known as Kitano (Kitano, Kitano) Tenjin around 993, and is said to be the origin of the present-day Osaka name "Kita."
Approximately 6,400 years ago, the Umeda area was a low-lying marshland formed by the gradual accumulation of sand carried by the Yodo River on top of a clay layer. In 1583, Toyotomi Hideyoshi began construction of Osaka Castle and the construction of a castle town began, laying the foundations for the current city of "Kita."
If we think back to ancient times, the scenery was completely different.
